I wanted to ask the board and the association members if there has been any consideration to making one of the two Caveman tournaments a different format. With 2 tournaments at the same center only 3 months apart, it would seem to benefit the majority of bowlers to run something a little different. I know that last year, we had 2 tournaments at Lava within a short amount of time and it seemed we ended up with two tournaments that looked remarkably alike. Similar cut score, mostly the same bowlers bowled well at both tournaments, etc... While I know that changing the shot to something different can be controversial, how about we take a look at a different format?
Doubles tournaments have been hugely successful the past few years, so some kind of doubles format might be a good option. I would also suggest and be an advocate of a regular qualifying followed by a head to head elimination finals with seeding based on qualifying (1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc...) Depending on the number of entries, there could be one round of byes like the PBA Sr tour if needed to make the format work. Another option would be an elimination style, where after the cut, all bowlers would bowl 2 games and the top half of the field would advance after each 2 game round. Ex., 24 bowlers make the cut - top 12 bowlers 2-game totals advance after round one, top 6 bowlers 2 game totals of round two, top 3 bowlers of round 3, etc...
I know that the computer program isn't necessarily set up for these type of formats, but they aren't hard at all to run by hand (there is no need to keep running totals) and points and prize funds can be combined and split evenly in a matter of minutes. I am willing to help with these if you want to pursue this.
Thoughts? Feedback?
I just think it would be nice to bowl a different format occasionally instead of two tournaments that just mirror each other if we are going to the same house and bowling on what is likely the same or VERY similar condition.
